Fashion and new materials. Designing the future.
Bilbao International Art and Fashion and the Basque BioDesign Center have come together this year to offer a talk with a guest artist that reflects the values and transformation of fashion towards a sustainable and innovative future.
Jef Montes is the Creative Director of Studio Adaptive Skins and winner of the VIII Edition of BIAAF.
Founded in 2018, Studio Adaptive Skins develops its own designs and offers a wide range of biodegradable materials and innovative production development services to other platforms and companies. Sustainability, upcycling and zero-waste design are at the heart of every project. The search for alternative means of recreating the production system is constantly researched to design a new production chain from a single fibre or yarn to the desired material or garment.
In addition, the winner of the Tanween Challenge will be presented, a BioFashion and Technology challenge run by the BDC in Ithra, Saudi Arabia. The winner, Manahel Alqassem, designed a bag with kombucha leather, inspired by Saudi culture and heritage. She will tell us about the process of designing the bag using this new category of sustainable materials.
The talk will be streamed live and accompanied by an interactive workshop with the two artists, where participants will be able to explore the types of materials that can be grown from living organisms such as Kombucha leather and will also be able to work with Jef Montes' filaments, weaving on DIY looms.
